Did you know that septic systems are one of the most "green" plumbing systems for the environment?
Read below to learn more about this fascinating on-site eco-system and how you should maintain it.
How does it work?
Components
A typical septic tank plumbing system has four main components: a pipe from the home, a septic tank, a drainfield, and the soil. Microbes in the soil digest or remove most contaminants from wastewater before it eventually reaches groundwater.
Pipe from the home
In most cases all of your household wastewater exits your home through a single pipe to the septic tank.
Septic Tank
The septic tank is a buried, watertight container typically made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene. It holds the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle out (forming sludge) and oil and grease to float to the surface (as scum). It also allows partial decomposition of the solid materials. Compartments and a T-shaped outlet in the septic tank help prevent the sludge and scum from leaving the tank and traveling in the drainfield area. Screens are also recommended to keep solids from entering the drainfield.
Tip: To prevent buildup, sludge and floating scum need to be removed through periodic pumping of the septic tank.
Regular inspections and pumping as necessary (generally every 3 to 5 years) are the best and cheapest way to keep your septic system in good working order.
Pumping your septic tank is like changing the oil on your car, spend a little to save a BIG expense.
Don't believe the hype about septic products sold on TV. There is NO additive that you can put in put in your tank to eliminate the need of pumping.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard "I don't have to have my tank inspected or pumped, I use 'Brand X' in my septic tank every month..."
Eventually, a neglected system with have a total failure with an interuption of service and a costly replacement. These same folks who put their faith in a box of "Brand-X"are the same ones who say "I don't know why the system failed, I used 'Brand-X' every month...."
Like everything, septic systems will need maintenance. Periodic pump out and inspections can prevent the unexpected interruptions and sudden system failures.
